Akwesasne, or “Land Where the Partridge Drums,” is a Kanien’keha:ka (Mohawk) community located on the St. Lawrence River in Eastern Ontario, home to approximately 25,000 people. The land is bisected by the United States–Canada international border and the Ontario–Quebec provincial border. The Akwesasne SCOPE (Seamless Care Optimizing the Patient Experience) project seeks to address the unique challenges of providing equitable healthcare services to the community, which faces significant health disparities due to historical and ongoing exposure to environmental contaminants from surrounding industry. The objectives of this project are to establish culturally safe clinical, logistical, and administrative pathways for medical specialists and learners to attend the community and provide specialty services.
