September: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Each year throughout September we offer programming and events to uplift #OrangeShirtDay—#WeWearOrange and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) to honour survivors, ancestors who died in residential schools, as well as their families and communities who continue to be affected.

While these educational opportunities are generally offered internally to faculty, learners, staff, and our partners; recordings, reflections, artful practices and media are shared publicly across our social platforms. We, like many others, pivoted during the pandemic to live-streams and virtual offerings. This is a practice that we have continued to serve as a beacon for innovation, learning, story-sharing and sharing strategies for cultivating safe health care spaces.

“Women are called out to the frontline to be the conduits of change. Women don’t change their minds – they are not there for power, or the corporation, or the stockholders; they are there for human life. We have been born into this time.” ~ Diane Longboat, Lead of GCWP-IH Decision-Making-Council of Elders

June: National Indigenous History Month & National Indigenous Peoples Day

More Than Words began as a humble movement that started at the outset of the pandemic and has continued to grow over the years, standing in solidarity with Indigenous, Afro-Indigenous, Two-Spirit and gender diverse community members, aligning with Pride Month.

GCWP-IH collaborates on creating an annual Virtual Resource Space with our partners, featuring an events calendar highlighting phenomenal initiatives and events to mark National Indigenous History Month, Indigenous People’s Day and Pride.
